The area in which we will be gathering is rich in natural habitats, many of which are "protected" under law. In spite of this a major new roadway is being driven through these unique places, destroying what can never be re-established. Additionally, the Government has just given the go-ahead for Fracking surveying and test drilling in the area, threatening the watershed and an even greater part of the countryside. Resistance to the Road is already on-going, and opposition to Fracking is rising. By coming here we can show our active support for the people who are already campaigning hard to stop these destructive projects.
Of course, this is not the only part of the UK that is under threat from Government and Multinationals. New Nuclear, Coal Power Stations converting to imported biomass, Opencast Coal mining, Countrywide Fracking are just a few of the destructive and dangerous developments threatening our environment.
Globally the rapidly melting ice caps and higher concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere show clearly that time is running out for us to stop the wholesale degradation of the planets biosphere. Multinational corporations violate the rights of the Indigenous Peoples of this world, destroying their homes and lives to turn a profit, and corporately funded naysayers deny that climate change is a threat to us all.
But more and more people are beginning to fight back, Slowly people are waking up to the fact that something needs to be done, and fast. We are just a small part of this resistance, but at our Summer Gathering we have a space where we can find ways of making sure that our actions are effective and meaningful...and HEARD!
